May 7th, 2015, Kottayam, Kerala: As an effort towards conducting skill development programs, familiarizing engineering graduates & 10th standard pass students pursuing vocational training with the latest automotive technologies and imparting modern training, Amal Jyothi College of Engineering, Kanjirapally, Kottayam has collaborated with VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd (VECV) to set up a state-of-the-art automobile lab-Amal Jyothi-Eicher Centre for Automobile Technology (AECat) at the college premises. This is the first of its kind automobile training center in Kerala run by an engineering college in association with VE Commercial Vehicles to bridge the skill gap experienced in the automotive sector at a national level. Mr. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, H’ble Minister for Transport, Forests & Environment, Govt of Kerela inaugurated the lab at Amal Jyothi College in the presence of His Excellency Mar Mathew Arackal Bishop of Kanjirappally & Patron of the college and Mr. Vinod Aggarwal CEO, VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd.

Mr. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, H’ble Minister for Transport, Forests & Environment, Govt of Kerala, said, “It gives me immense pride to inaugurate Amal Jyothi-Eicher Center for Automobile Technology, the very first in Kerala. Skill development is core to any nation’s economic growth and employment generation and an initiative like this will provide excellent avenues for the large number of school pass outs in our country who are unable to continue further education for multiple reasons. I would like to congratulate both Amal Jyothi College of Engineering and VE Commercial Vehicles for taking a lead in this domain.”

As part of its initiatives to enhance up-skilling, training and empowering the youth, VECV has been establishing automobile labs across the country, to provide hands on learning and certification to ITI as well as degree students on the latest developments in automotive technology thereby, improving their prospects for seeking employment. VECV has established several such automobile labs in collaboration with prominent educational institutions across the country (Mysore, Ahmedabad, Howrah, Mohali, Dehradun, Vijayawada & Coimbatore).

Mr. Vinod Aggarwal CEO, VECV said, “Despite being one of the largest contributor to GDP and employment generation, the automotive industry is challenged with huge shortage of skilled manpower. According to industry reports, in next 10 years there will be demand for 25 million trained manpower in the automobile sector in India. VECV strongly believes in supporting this cause and bridging the skill gap in the country. Industry-institutional tie-up is an ongoing initiative for VE Commercial Vehicles and several such projects are underway. We hope that our initiative will be able to create a significant change in lives of the unemployed youth.”

His Excellency Mar Mathew Arackal Bishop of Kanjirappally & Patron of Amal Jyothi College said, “The skill development center will be a boon for the faculty and engineering students to have a hands-on experience into the best-of-its-class automobile technology in the world. It also offers an excellent opportunity for scores of unemployed youth with class 10/12 education to be trained for job-oriented courses in the automobile sector.”

The new Amal Jyothi-Eicher Center has a dedicated space of 9000 sq ft workshop, library and classrooms. It will familiarize trainees in the most scientific way of repair, maintenance and overhauling of commercial vehicles, modern manufacturing process & customer service management VECV has provided dynamic cut section models, practice units, tools, practice vehicle & other new generation training aids VECV will train the trainers and conduct regular follow-up programmes to the faculty to update them on developments in the field of automobile technology.

The Center will focus at equipping students with knowledge through state-of-the-art automotive technology and bridge the skill gap that exists between traditional education and industry needs.

The following courses are conducted, blend with theory and practical sessions:

  • Training programmes for B Tech students
  • Automotive Technician programme for one year (Nine months at Amal Jyothi and 3-months internship at VECV plant or its dealer centers)
  • Short term programmes tailored for the local and national needs.

Amal Jyothi College of Engineering, Kanjirappally, offers B.Tech in 9 branches, M.Tech in 8 specialisations and MCA in 3 streams. The annual B.Tech. intake of 780 is the largest of its kind in Kerala.
